Circlips act as a rigid shoulder within a bore, Internal Circlips are closed down to pass a bore and released to spring down outwards into a groove. Providing a rigid, yet tough load bearing shoulder on a shaft, External Circlips are expanded to pass over a shaft and then released to spring back into the groove.

Common examples include e-clips (e-ring) and the (both internal and external) snap ring or circlip. These general types of fasteners are sized to provide an interference fit onto (or into, in the case of an internal fastener) a groove or land when in use, such that they must be elastically deformed in order to install or remove them.
Features
Rather than being a complete circle, Circlips tend to have open ends. Circlips have a spring pressure effect do to their design of being open ended. this spring effect ensures that they do not move or slip once fitted.
Many types of circlips have a small hole at either end to allow for the installation or removal with circlip pliers. Specialised circlip pliers can be used for this as they have tips that fit into the small holes within the circlip.
Types of circlips
E type circlips, or E-Clips do not require installation with specialised circlip pliers. These are mounted radially, rather than axially. They are easy to remove and install.
